The Secret of Kells

Summary: In a fortress trembling under Viking shadow, young Brendan is meant to stay safe inside the walls. Instead he follows the work of the Book — gold leaf, fierce cats, and a forest that is not polite about holiness.

My Review: This is the sort of film that remembers beauty is a weapon. The lines curl like living vines; the danger arrives with axes and also with fear of the woods. Brendan does not become brave by speeches. He becomes brave by copying pages until his hands know what his knees do not. Watch it once for the pictures. Watch it again for the argument: that keeping a light requires leaving the keep.

Good quote (of the sort the film teaches without saying): Make the book, even when the night is already inside the gate.

Concerns: Stylized peril, wolves, raids — intense for the very young, never coarse.
